The First Kill

I thrust the stake forwards as hard as I could. It felt rough on my hands, as though the wood might splinter off and impale me instead of my intended target.

‘No,’ Mum said, ‘You’ve got to put more weight behind it. You’ve got a rib cage to break through.’

I tried again, gritting my teeth and punching the weapon out with all my might.

‘No,’ my mother said again, then pulled the stake from my hand. She acted out the movement over and over, allowing me to study it. ‘Watch how I turn my shoulder into it, see? I’m using my body weight to add power to the thrust.’

I nodded.

‘You try,’ Mum said, handing the stake back to me.

As I repeated the movement she’d shown me, Mum nodded. There was even, perhaps, the smallest semblance of a smile on her face. ‘Good. That’s better. Keep practising. You’ll get there yet.’

Mum left the room, and I pushed the stake forwards over and over, hours passing until my arm ached and could move no more. She didn’t need to tell me how important it was that I perfected this move; I’d seen the hunt, I’d seen her work, I knew what we were playing for. The difference between ninety percent prepared and a hundred percent prepared could end up being the difference between life and death.

The days passed, and my technique gradually grew stronger, more instinctive. I studied Mum’s hunts, writing up notes on fighting style, tracking methods, and everything else a young vampire hunter might need to know. I pushed the stake forwards in the comforts of my room, curtains closed to stop the neighbours seeing, until—

‘OK,’ Mum said, poking her head around my bedroom door. ‘It’s time.’

I nodded to her, and she returned the gesture.
